If you have been eying the but want a city-going petrol or an automatic variant, you might be in luck. At the ongoing Geneva Motor Show, the company has confirmed that they will be plonking an in-house-developed 1.6-litre petrol engine in the Harrier. This engine will also get an automatic transmission option. But this motor is currently under development and the petrol-powered Harrier can only be expected in India by mid-2020 when the BSVI fuel norms kick in.

The 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine will also feature direct injection tech (GDI) which offers better performance and efficiency than MPFI. Hence, the 1.6-litre unit is expected to make close to 140PS of power, which can be increased by adding a turbo later for larger cars. Initially, this engine will be offered with a 6-speed manual and a torque converter automatic. This automatic will later be swapped with a dual-clutch transmission which will be shared with the diesel engine, as well as the smaller Tata cars based on the AlphARC platform like the.

The petrol engine will also be powering the, which is called the Buzzard in the European market. Currently, both these SUVs feature a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel motor with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The automatic gearbox for this engine is expected to launch later this year. Even the 7-seater Harrier (Buzzard) is expected to arrive in India by late 2019.
