- Major upgrades include all new interiors and bigger wheels
Christmas has come early this year Don't believe us? Just take one look at the all new 911 range and you will.. Others, including a Turbo, GTS and GT3, are set to follow soon.
Powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six engine that churns out 450PS of power, both the Carrera S and 4S have received a decent bump in power over their predecessors. The new 911s make 30PS more than the outgoing models. Meanwhile, Porsche hasn't revealed their torque output yet andndash; the current 991-based Carrera S makes 450Nm of peak torque.
The new 911s now come paired to an all-new 8-speed dual clutch gearbox and while Porsche hasn't confirmed yet, we expect a manual transmission option to come a little later as well. With the new engine and transmission, the new 911s are about 0.4 seconds quicker than their predecessors in a 0-100kmph run. According to Porsche, the new Carrera can do the sprint in 3.7 seconds while the all-wheel drive 4s can accomplish the feat in 3.6 seconds. Add the optional Sport Chrono Package to the mix and you can shave off another 0.2 seconds on the clock for both the new 911s.
When it comes to design, Porsche hasn't fiddled around much apart from making the 992 generation visibly wider and larger than its predecessor. For this, the new 911 has got a redesigned bumper along with larger cooling ducts that give the cars a more muscular appeal. The front facia houses all new LED headlamps that are rounder now and reminisce of the classic design seen on the early models from the 1970s. Move to the rear and you can see a wider tail section that houses new LED tail lamps that are now connected in the middle by a full-width LED light band and look sleeker than the current generation models. Of course, there are other nifty bits here and there, but the overall design has remained largely unchanged.
Among the changes are a revised chassis, better weight distribution and the new mostly aluminum design gets wider wheel arches that accommodate the larger 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. There are pop-out door handles as well and the active safety systems get an improvement, with a dedicated 'Wet Mode' for slippery conditions.
Step inside, and you see that the new 911s have received a major tech overhaul. The interiors have been redesigned and the centre console now houses a massive 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a host of connectivity options that include Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Safety has received top priority on the new 911s and Porsche has included a new camera-based warning and brake-assist system that detects the risk of collision with moving objects and initiates emergency braking. The new range also gets insane gadgetry like Night Vision Assist with a thermal imaging camera as an option for when you need to go covert.
While Porsche hasn't revealed as to when we can expect the new 911s in India, we reckon they'll reach our shores sometime late in 2019. And with the current gen 911s being sold with sticker prices starting from Rs 1.42 crore here, expect the new 911 range to easily cross the Rs 1.5 crore mark when they go on sale here.
