Royal Enfield’s parent company, Eicher Motors, has applied for European trademark rights to the name Royal Enfield Meteor and wants to be able to use the title on ‘motorcycles and parts and fittings therefore’ as well as on clothing. The application was published on April 3, 2019, and Royal Enfield has to wait until July 3, 2019, to get it passed (if no other company objects to it).
Interestingly, the original Royal Enfield Meteor, and subsequent Super Meteor were parallel-twins, so there is the chance this could apply to a new model in the 650 range. We’ve been hoping to see a slightly more modern and feature-filled version of the Interceptor 650, something along the lines of the Triumph Street Twin, with features like traction control, ride-by-wire or even alloy wheels with tubeless tyres.
The other alternative is that Royal Enfield may apply this name to the production version of the KX Bobber. However, the KX Bobber was showcased with a V-twin power plant and not a parallel-twin like the new 650s and the older Meteor models. Either way, it’s a great name for a motorcycle, and another legendry moniker we’d love to see come back to life.
