The Ferrari Purosangue might be the most controversial product the Italian carmaker in its 72 year history. Considered a paragon for soulful cars, Ferrari shook the world when it announced that an SUV is on its cards. We knew that the SUV was on track, but what we didn't know was when exactly it's coming and most importantly, what's powering it.

Speaking to Autocar, Ferrari's chief technical officer, Michael Leiters, has revealed some interesting developments about the upcoming SUV. The SUV is codenamed 175 and, if you're scratching your heads, the name Purosangue translates to 'thoroughbred' in Italian.

Putting various speculations to rest, we now know that the SUV will not be a jacked up GTC4 and will be based on a new front mid-engined platform. This platform will be capable of holding a V6, V8 or even a V12 engine. It can also support a rear- or all-wheel drive layout. The latter sounds more probable for the Purosangue. It is rumoured to be paired up with a drivetrain that is similar to the. That means a plug-in hybrid that packs three electric motors and a turbo V6 is likely on the cards. Considering the Purosangue has to go up against the Urus, Ferrari might also choose to offer a V12 as a more powerful variant.

Ferrari has completed the design of the SUV and is working closely with the engineering team to overcome all the hurdles. It is also rumoured to come with four doors and four seats. After all, it is a challenge for Maranello as unlike its rivals, Ferrari has to come up with a bespoke product. Yes, we mean the, Bentayga, Q7 and the Cayenne which are all loosely based on the same platform.

Ferrari is in the pursuit of making the Purosangue distinct from its competition. Dynamics will be a strong trait while the Italian brand is also working hard to create an identity in the performance SUV space. In the meantime, Ferrari has also hinted at a new range of GT cars starting with the replacement for the GTC4 Lusso.

Ferrari making an SUV is a hard pill to swallow, but it's happening, and 2022 is the year that will witness it. The Lamborghini Urus and the upcoming Aston Martin
