  • It is based on the same design language as the Yaris hatchback.
  • The SUV will get an AWD option.
  • Powered by Toyota's new hybrid system.
  • Not likely to make it to the Indian market.

Toyota has unveiled the Yaris Cross, a compact SUV based on its hatchback namesake. Its debut comes almost two months after it was scheduled to be showcased at the in March. Toyota claims it is built for Europe keeping its roads in mind where the crossover SUV will debut in 2021. It is based on the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris hatchback.

The Yaris Cross is a relatively small car as compared to other compact SUVs. It is 4180mm long and has a width of 1,765mm. The SUV stands at a height of 1560m and has a wheelbase of 2560mm.

When it comes to the design, the main highlight is the contrasting integrated spoiler. The Yaris Cross may be small in size but its looks tell a different story. Sitting atop 18-inch alloy wheels, the SUV features a high set bonnet with sleek headlamps. It features vertically stacked LED DRLs on the front bumper accompanied by fog lamps below it and side-swept LED tail lamps at the rear. In addition to this, it gets side cladding and dual-tone options.

Despite there being no official list, the Yaris Cross could borrow some equipment from its hatchback sibling. It features a digital instrument control, automatic climate control, powered tailgate, and a touchscreen infotainment system. On the safety end, the SUV will get the Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features and steering assist. Interior highlights include dual-tone upholstery and ambient lighting.

The Yaris Cross is powered by Toyota's new hybrid powertrain. It features a 1.5-litre, 3 cylinder petrol engine paired with a self-charging hybrid system. The output power produced, 115PS, is transmitted to the wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. For those who want extra traction, whether it's for poor weather or some off-road fun, the SUV also gets an all-wheel-drive as an option.

Now for some bad news, the Yaris Cross will only make it to the Japanese and European markets and will not be available in India. Worry not, Toyota has already announced it will offer a built with Maruti Suzuki. This collaborative effort is set to be launched in 2022 and will be based on Toyota's platform and spawn the next-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza.
