The Hero eMaestro Concept electric scooter has been spotted in the flesh at the company’s R&D facility, the CIT (Hero Global Center for Innovation and Technology) in Rajasthan. As you can see, it is based on the Maestro Edge platform but packs a new all-electric powertrain. We had seen the electric prototype without any body panels at the facility during the Hero World 2020 event in February, but we weren’t permitted to click pictures.

The scooter is powered by a lithium-ion battery linked to a permanent magnet motor. An interesting feature is that the reverse, neutral and drive mode can be toggled by twisting the left handlebar, old-school scooter style, while the right handlebar gets the throttle control as usual. The technical details of the electric scooter are unknown at the moment, but expect it to offer performance equivalent to a 110cc petrol-powered scooter.

It packs a fully digital instrument cluster and features cloud connectivity too. The headlamp and tail lamp appear to be LED whereas the indicators are traditional bulbs. To further differentiate it from its gas-guzzling cousin, the electric scooter concept features gold finish on the telescopic fork, alloy wheels and electric motor. The rear end uses a single shock absorber like the regular Maestro. Brakes include drum units on both ends with CBS.

Expect Hero MotoCorp to price the production version of the scooter at around Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom) and the brand is likely to launch it in mid-2020. But given the recent coronavirus pandemic, we wouldn’t be surprised if it gets delayed. All said and done, it looks like Hero MotoCorp has a very competent contender to take on the likes of the Bajaj Chetak electric and TVS iQube Electric.
