  • Cosmetic tweaks include a split headlamp setup, sleek grille, and minor rear changes.
  • Overall cabin design and layout is expected to be similar to the standard Wagon R with bits like a climate control aircon unit and a 7.0-inch touchscreen system.
  • Expected to get electric and internal combustion engine options.
  • Likely to be priced at a premium over the standard Wagon R.

Back in October 2019, we got our first glimpse of Maruti's upcoming XL5, a premium version of the Wagon R hatchback, testing in India. The highlight being that it was an all-electric test mule doing the rounds. With no Maruti EVs planned for 2020, the carmaker continues testing the EV with new spy shots surfacing online.

The new photos reveal the XL5 retaining its full camo attire but it is likely to feature some cosmetic tweaks. The overall silhouette looks similar to the standard Wagon R, aside from bits like a split headlamp setup, sleek grille, and minor changes to the rear for differentiation. The spy shots also reveal the 15-inch alloy wheels from the Ignis.

The overall cabin design and layout is similar to the Wagon R. Expect features like the climate control aircon unit and the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system to be retained.

Under the hood, the standard WagonR is powered by a K12B 1.2-litre engine. It produces 81PS of power and 113Nm of torque. Transmission options might include a 5-speed manual and an AMT. Powertrain specifications of the XL5 EV are yet to be revealed. Going by the current trend, the XL5 could be offered in both electric and internal combustion engine powertrains.

The XL5/Wagon R EV's launch has been delayed in India due to its high cost and the lack of infrastructure to support EVs. Expect the EV hatchback to launch by 2021 at a premium over the standard Wagon R that retails from Rs 4.46 lakh to Rs 5.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
