- Tata is looking forward to become a key player in the EV segment.
- Altroz EV and a new Tigor EV with better range is also on the cards.
- All four electric models will debut in the next 12 to 18 months.
Tata Motors is planning to up its EV game by introducing four new all-electric vehicles in India within the next 12 to 18 months. At the 74th annual general meeting, N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Motors, revealed that the four EVs in the pipeline are the EV, Altroz EV, the new Tigor EV with better range and a fourth yet undisclosed model.
This is the first official confirmation from the manufacturer regarding the already broke cover at this year's Geneva Motor Show. The Nexon EV is likely to come with a similar powertrain setup as the Altroz EV that was showcased in Geneva. The hatchback is said to pack a range of 250-300km along with fast-charging capabilities, enabling the battery to be recharged to up to 80 per cent in just 60 minutes. The Altroz EV will be a more affordable all-electric offering and is speculated to come with a price tag of around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). Taking this into account, the odds of the Nexon EV being priced north of the Rs 15 lakh mark are high.
The, which is currently on sale for fleet owners, has a range of 140kms on a full charge and is priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 10.09 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Tata will soon be debuting an improved version that will be able to return a range of 180-250km on a full charge. "Tiago is selling well at around 8,000-9,000 in a month. We need something bigger than that which can get us 10,000 a month volume. We need 2-3 nameplates of high volume whether it comes from EV or IC engine cars it does not matter," said N Chandrasekaran.
is eying on becoming a key player in the EV space and is also leaning on the government's initiatives and incentives for the faster adoption of electric vehicles in India. Meanwhile, Tata's rivals like Mahindra are already working on their own EV offerings for India. The all-electric XUV300 from Mahindra is destined for next year and will be the primary rival to the Nexon EV.
