The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza comes with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine developing 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque. These figures, though not bottom-rung, aren't class-leading in any sort either. In fact, the Brezza's numbers are slightly better than the naturally aspirated unit, the least powerful car in this comparison. The EcoSport's 3-cylinder Dragon engine develops class-leading power while the Mahindra's turbo-petrol unit develops class-leading torque. The Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue's turbo-petrol unit develop similar power figures and don't disappoint.

Almost all the models in this test come with a manual transmission. However, all of them utilise different automatic units. The Brezza is offered with an old-school 4-speed torque converter while the Nexon utilises a simple 6-speed AMT. Meanwhile, the Ford EcoSport and Venue Turbo come with more sophisticated 6-speed torque converter and 7-speed DCT units respectively. You don't have any automatic options for the Venue NA petrol and Mahindra XUV300.
