The Datsun Redigo is scheduled to get a major update quite soon, with the refreshed budget hatchback getting BS6 engines, a fresh design and more equipment. Spy shots of the Redigo facelift on test in Chennai have surfaced, providing a few design details.

The updated Redigo will retain the pre-facelift model’s overall aesthetic – the tall-boy design and raised, almost-SUV-like styling cues will remain. It is at the front that most of the changes are expected, as the model will have to comply with crash test norms (instituted back in October last year) and the upcoming pedestrian safety norms.

From the sides, the only major change seems to be the lack of door creases on the lower half – the pre-facelift Redigo had rather deep ones that added a hint of muscularity to the budget hatchback’s looks. The rear of the new Redigo, however, seems to be near-identical to the outgoing model’s.

From a mechanical standpoint, the new Redigo will also get BS6-compliant versions of the current car’s 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre engines. Making 54hp and 68hp, respectively, in BS4 form, the upgraded engines are already available on one of the Datsun Redigo’s rivals – the Renault Kwid. The smaller mill will continue with a 5-speed manual as standard, while the larger engine will continue to have an AMT option too.

In order to compete on an even footing with the likes of Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and S-Presso, as well as the Renault Kwid, Datsun will also furnish the new Redigo with more equipment and tech than the outgoing model. This will also necessitate changes to the dashboard and interior layout. Expect a touchscreen infotainment system and dual-front airbags on the top-spec variant.

As the Datsun Redigo is currently priced at Rs 2.80-3.62 lakh for the 0.8-litre model and Rs 3.90-4.37 lakh for the 1.0-litre version, expect new Redigo prices to be about Rs 10,000 higher, depending on the variant.
