BMW Motorrad has launched the all-new S 1000 XR in India at Rs 20.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The new adventure-sport tourer (although we prefer calling it a sport-tourer only) replaces the first-generation S 1000 XR and has been built completely from the ground up. We are talking about a new engine, frame and bodywork along with a host of electronic equipment. BMW will only get the 'Pro' variant to India via the CBU route.
The new S 1000 XR's styling is vastly different from what we've seen in the past. In fact, BMW's new approach to design is also evident in the recently launched BMW F900 R and F 900 XR. When it comes to the new S 1000 XR, we see a blend of aggression and purpose, and it makes the bike appear beefier than the previous motorcycle. The windscreen, located above the LED headlamp, is two-step height-adjustable. In keeping with its touring focus, the ergonomics are upright and comfortable, with an accessible 840mm seat height. BMW has also managed to cleverly integrate pannier mounts that sit flush with the overall design of the motorcycle.
The new S 1000 XR is powered by a Euro5/BS6 compliant 999cc, inline-four, liquid-cooled motor that develops 165hp at 11,000rpm and 114Nm at 9,250rpm. It is paired to a 6-speed gearbox, with a slipper clutch and engine drag torque control (MSR) as standard. The claimed 0-100kph time is 3.3sec and top speed is in excess of 200kph.
The engine is based on the new S 1000 RR superbike's unit, however, BMW has revised the manifolds and used special cam profiles for a meatier mid-range. The gearing too has been altered to suit the touring application of the XR. The fourth, fifth and sixth gears are tall and that translates to relaxed engine RPMs on the highway, as we discovered during our first ride in Spain. You can read all about it here.
As is expected from any modern-day BMW motorcycle, the new S 1000 XR is kitted with a wide range of electronics. It gets four ride modes as standard – Rain, Road, Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. The Dynamic Pro mode is a rider customisable mode that allows one to configure the traction control, throttle response, ABS and wheelie control settings. In addition, there's DTC and Hill Start Control. All modes and settings can be accessed from the new 6.5-inch, full-colour TFT display.
The chassis consists of a new frame that has also been derived from the new S 1000 RR. Along with the new swingarm, it shaves 2.1kg off the overall weight of the motorcycle.
The new S 1000 XR also gets BMW's Dynamic ESA ( Electronic Suspension Adjustment) system as standard. It alters the damping on the 45mm front USD fork and the rear monoshock, which also features electronic preload adjustment.
The new BMW S 1000 XR is available in two colours, Ice Grey and Racing Red. Bookings are open from today across all BMW Motorrad dealerships. The motorcycle comes with a standard three year / unlimited kilometre warranty, which can be extended to four or five years.
As far as competition goes, the bike goes up against the Ducati Multistrada 1260 S. However, Ducati is yet to launch the BS6 Multistrada in India and that leaves the BMW with the segment to itself, for now.
