While Hero is still king of the commuter segment and continues to be the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world, its more premium products haven’t quite impressed us for some time now. More importantly, the brand didn’t have any offerings in the lucrative 160cc segment. Up until now, that is. The recently launched Xtreme 160R has dazzled us and you can read all about it in our comprehensive road test review here. But now we’re going to dive into the numbers of our test and check out the Xtreme 160R’s performance and mileage:
Specs:
Engine |
163cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine |
Power |
15.2PS @ 8500rpm |
Torque |
14Nm @ 6500rpm |
Frame |
Tubular diamond frame |
Suspension |
F: Conventional Fork R: 7-step Preload-adjustable monoshock |
Brakes |
F: 276mm petal disc R: 220mm petal disc/130mm drum |
Performance:
Parameters |
Hero Xtreme 160R |
Acceleration: 0-60kmph |
5.62sec |
Acceleration: 0-100kmph |
20.09sec |
Quarter Mile |
20.09sec@ 100.01kmph |
30-70kmph (3rd gear) |
6.90sec |
40-80kmph (4th gear) |
9.17sec |
The Xtreme 160R manages the dash to 60kmph in 5.62sec, which isn’t hugely impressive but it’s not too bad either. The 20.09sec 0-100kmph time is on par with 2-valve competition like the Suzuki Gixxer and Yamaha FZ Fi V3, but the Hero loses out to the benchmark of this class, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V. Thanks to its lightness, the Xtreme’s in-gear acceleration times are quite quick as well.
Fuel Efficiency:
Hero Xtreme 160R |
|
City Mileage |
55.47kmpl |
Highway Mileage |
47.38kmpl |
This being an all-new motor, it has to comply with strict BS6 emission norms, so it must use fuel-injection. One of the byproducts of this is excellent fuel-efficiency, at least in urban conditions. The Xtreme’s mileage of 55.47kmpl in the city is class-leading, though the 5-speed gearbox means that this figure drops to 47.38kmpl out on the highway. We will be testing more BS6 bikes in this segment soon, so keep an eye out for future comparisons involving the Xtreme 160R.
Braking:
Hero Xtreme 160R |
|
80-0kmph |
38.81m |
60-0kmph |
22.90m |
The Hero is an extremely light motorcycle but unfortunately it fails to capitalise on this lightness in the braking department. Despite decent lever feedback, the Xtreme 160R’s stopping distances are slightly on the higher side even in this double disc variant tested by us.
The Takeaway
We're glad that we had a chance to strap a VBox to this exciting new bike and see what its performance is like. But viewed in isolation, these numbers don't serve much purpose. Which is why, very soon, we're going to test the Xtreme against the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6, and see if the king of the segment can retain its throne even in this new era of stricter emission norms. Stay tuned!
