*intelligent Manual Transmission
-
The Sonet comes with two engine options: a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. Both are shared with the Hyundai Venue.
-
While the naturally aspirated petrol engine is the least powerful in this test, the turbo-petrol engine is one of the most powerful engines here. The EcoSport's unit develops 2PS more while all others play middle ground.
-
That said, the Sonet's 1.0-litre turbo-petrol is not as torquey as the Mahindra XUV300's engine.
-
Almost all the cars except the Sonet turbo come with a manual gearbox with a clutch pedal. The Sonet turbo's clutchless manual, same as the Venue's iMT, tries to fill the void here.
-
All SUVs except the Mahindra XUV300 and the naturally aspirated petrol variants of the Sonet and Venue come with an automatic gearbox. The turbo variants of the Hyundai and Kia also utilise a more sophisticated 7-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic in the segment.

*115PS tune limited to AT variants.
-
The diesel variants of these models come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
-
The Sonet's manual variants develop 100PS, same as Venue's and unit.
-
The automatic variants of the Sonet come with a higher-spec 115 tune and that almost matches the Mahindra XUV300, the most powerful SUV here.
-
The XUV300's engine is the torquiest followed by the Nexon, and the Sonet diesel AT. EcoSport is the least torquey here.
-
All cars come with a manual gearbox while the Sonet, Nexon and XUV300 also feature an automatic gearbox.
-
Kia Sonet goes an extra step and offers a 6-speed torque converter automatic, becoming the only SUV in the segment to offer a conventional automatic in the segment.
