Royal Enfield has been working on upgrading its motorcycle lineup. A fleet of the bikemaker’s new test mules was spotted testing in Chennai along with a couple of 650cc twins, the upcoming all-new Meteor and Roadster. Among the pack was an all-new retro motorcycle designed as the Classic 350. However, we do not believe this would be a replacement for the Classic 350. Since the Classic 350 BS6 has already been launched, the brand could continue selling its best selling motorcycle and offer this new bike as a premium retro alternative.

Now Royal Enfield has trademarked the names Hunter and Sherpa but we feel it would reserve the later for a more adventurous motorcycle, possibly a higher capacity Himalayan. So what we see could be the upcoming Royal Enfield Hunter. The new motorcycle gets familiar design cues in the form of large mudguards, enclosed telescopic forks, enclosed headlamp cover with chrome bezel and circular headlamp, tail lamp and turn indicators.

Like the Meteor, the upcoming motorcycle appears to use the J-platform. It uses a double-cradle frame with telescopic forks and dual shock absorbers as well as spoke wheels. The test mule had a front disc and rear drum brake setup but Royal Enfield could offer a rear disc brake with dual-channel ABS in the higher variants. It gets an all-new air-cooled motor which we suspect will have a larger displacement than the current 346cc fuel-injected mill on the Classic 350 BS6. The new powerplant may offer more performance than the current Classic 350 BS6’s 19.3PS and 28Nm output and could also get a 6-speed gearbox.
Royal Enfield could showcase its new lineup comprising the Meteor, Sherpa and Hunter later this year. The new bikes are likely to be launched in India by early-2021.
