The 2020 Toyota Innova – known as the Innova Crysta in India – has received a 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. This score is valid for the Innova MPV on sale in markets like Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
- 2020 Innova scored a total of 82.69 points, giving it a 5-star rating
- Adult and Child Occupant Protection rated at 45.90 and 21.51, respectively
- Innova Crysta facelift to arrive in India next year
2020 Toyota Innova crash test results
In ASEAN NCAP’s crash tests for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), the Innova claimed 33.05 points from a maximum of 36, giving it a weighted score of 45.90. The MPV was given 21.51 points in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) tests and 15.28 points in terms of Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) on offer.
For reference, the 2020 Toyota Hilux and Fortuner were also recently awarded five stars in ASEAN NCAP’s crash tests. The weighted scores for the Fortuner facelift were 47.27 (AOP), 22.13 (COP) and 18.06 (SATs), adding up to a total of 87.46 points.
2020 Toyota Innova specifications and safety kit
The Innova tested, which is on sale in the mentioned ASEAN markets, comes with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that makes 139hp and 183Nm of torque, and weighs in at 1,698kg.
Safety kit is also nearly identical across markets and comprises ABS, ESC and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passengers asstandard. However, for Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos, the Innova get seven airbags, while the version on sale in Indonesia gets seven only in higher variants; the entry-level model gets two.
ASEAN NCAP had crash tested the second-gen Innova back in 2016, but then it had achieved a 4-star rating. At the time, the MPV didn't come with ESC as standard, which was why it did not qualify for the highest rating.
Do note that these results have no direct bearing on the Toyota Innova Crysta made and on sale in India. While the MPV here is similar in most aspects to the car on sale in ASEAN countries, we get a 166hp, 2.7-litre petrol and a 150hp, 2.4-litre diesel engine option, and our entry-level Innova Crysta GX variant gets three airbags as standard.
Also, ASEAN NCAP and Global NCAP have different standards for rating cars. Nonetheless, a 5-star rating can only bode well.
2021 Toyota Innova Crysta facelift safety rating
Revealed just last week, the Innova Crysta facelift could have a similar safety rating, as the changes to the MPV are mostly cosmetic and feature-related. The refreshed Innova is expected to arrive in India sometime in 2021, after the launch of the Fortuner facelift.
