Last week, Yamaha unveiled the new MT-09 and now the Japanese brand has ridden in the new Yamaha MT-07. Just like its older sibling, the first thing you will notice about the motorcycle is its revised styling. The cyclopic LED headlight is something that will take some time getting used to; we think the one on the last generation was way better. Apart from an LED headlight, the new bike also features LED DRLs, tail lamp and turn indicators. Yamaha designers have also redesigned the body panels and the fuel tank which makes the 2021 MT-07 look sportier than its predecessor. It continues to feature a digital instrument console, but it’s still an LCD unit and not a TFT screen. Come on Yamaha, it’s 2020!
Moving on, the Yamaha MT-07 now gets a Euro5/BS6-compliant motor. Unlike the new MT-09, engine displacement remains similar to its predecessor, at 680cc. The parallel-twin engine with a 270-degree crank pumps out 73.4PS and 67Nm. The new emission norms have dropped power and torque figures by 1.4PS and 1Nm respectively. Despite the minor drop in numbers, Yamaha claims the engine has been tuned for linear power delivery.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 carries forward the diamond frame seen on its predecessor. Suspension hardware remains a simple affair with a telescopic fork and a monoshock unit. Stopping power has been improved with larger 298mm discs, instead of the old 282mm version at the front. It also receives better shoes in the form of Michelin Road 5 tyres. The new Yamaha MT-07 tips the scale at 184kg (gain of 1.3kg) and has an accessible seat height of 805mm.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 has been priced at $7,700 (Rs 5.45 lakh). Deliveries in Europe will commence by March 2021. As for the Indian market, the MT-07 is unlikely to make its way to our shores as Yamaha India doesn’t seem to be keen on the premium bike segment. However, if Yamaha manages to get the bike via the CKD route and price it competitively, the Yamaha MT-07 has some serious potential to rival the Kawasaki Z650 and the upcoming Triumph Trident.
